Seat options

What you can ask about

Each airline sets its own seat rules, seat names, and prices. These are the kinds of requests a travel agent can look into for your booking.

  • Window and aisle seats

Requests for a window view or easier aisle access, subject to what's open on your flight.

  • Seating together

Looking for seats next to each other for your group or family.

  • Preferred seats

Standard seats in locations an airline may charge extra for, such as rows nearer the front.

  • Extra-legroom seats

Seats with more space, such as some bulkhead or exit rows. Exit rows have airline and safety eligibility requirements.

  • Seat upgrades within your cabin

A different seat type in the cabin you've booked, where the airline offers one. Moving to a higher cabin is a cabin upgrade.

Good to know

How seat requests work

Seat options depend on the airline, the aircraft, your fare, and what's available at the time of the request.

  1. A request is not a confirmed seat assignment

Asking for a seat does not secure it. A seat is assigned only when the airline confirms it on your booking.

  2. Some seats cost extra

Preferred, extra-legroom, and other seat types often carry an airline charge, and any charge is explained before you authorize anything.

  3. Operational changes can affect assignments

A different aircraft, a schedule change, or other operational reasons can move or remove seat assignments, including paid ones.

  4. The airline controls eligibility and final availability

Your fare may restrict advance seat selection, and exit rows have safety requirements. The airline decides which seats are available and who can have them.

Costs

What seat options can cost

Some seats are included in a fare and some are not. When there is a seat charge, it is set by the airline.

Airline seat charges

Set by the airline for the seat you choose. Prices vary by flight, seat, and fare, and whether a paid seat can be refunded is decided under the airline's policies.

Our service fee

Quoted on the call before you authorize

Charged by Travelz Portal for our own help with this request: a flat fee per passenger, separate from the airline’s charges and not paid to the airline. There is no charge to discuss your options, and nothing is charged until you authorize it.

Special situations

Families, accessibility, and cabin upgrades

Traveling with young children? Some airlines have policies for seating young children next to an accompanying adult. Check the airline's policy for your flight, and ask us to look at seats together.

Need a seat because of a disability? Disability-related seating accommodations are arranged with the airline under its procedures and federal rules. Contact the airline directly so it can make the arrangement.

Want premium economy, business class, or another cabin? That is a cabin upgrade rather than a seat change. See flight or cabin upgrades on our Booking Help page.

Seat FAQs

Questions about seats

Seat assignments are always controlled by the airline.

Can you guarantee a window or aisle seat?

No. We can look at the seats that appear to be available and request one, but the airline controls seat availability and assignments. A request is not a confirmed seat assignment.

Why do some seats cost extra?

Airlines set prices for seats in certain locations or with more space. Whether a seat is included in your fare or carries a charge depends on the airline and on the fare you bought.

Can we be seated together?

It depends on what's available on your flight and on your fare. We can look for seats next to each other, and some airlines have specific policies for seating young children with an adult. If adjacent seats aren't available, we will explain the alternatives.

What is the difference between a seat upgrade and a cabin upgrade?

A seat upgrade is a different seat within the cabin you've booked, such as an extra-legroom seat. A cabin upgrade moves you to a higher class of service, such as premium economy or business class. Cabin upgrades are covered on our Booking Help page.

Could my seat assignment change after it is confirmed?

Yes. Aircraft changes, schedule changes, and other operational reasons can affect seat assignments, including paid seats. What happens to a seat charge in that situation is decided under the airline's policies and applicable rules.

Can I choose seats directly with the airline?

Yes. You can usually view and choose seats through the airline or your original booking provider. You do not need to use our service to do so.
