Ways pets travel

What you can ask about

Each airline sets its own pet policy, including which animals it accepts, where they can travel, and how many pets can be on one flight.

  • Pets in the cabin

A small dog or cat in a carrier that fits under the seat in front of you, where the airline allows pets in the cabin.

  • Checked or cargo transport

Some airlines carry larger pets in the hold or through a separate cargo service, and some don't carry pets this way at all.

  • Trained service dogs

Service dogs are handled under separate federal rules rather than as pets, and airlines may ask for Department of Transportation forms.

  • Emotional support animals

Airlines are not required to treat emotional support animals as service animals, and may handle them under their pet policy.

Good to know

How adding a pet works

What's possible depends on the airline, the aircraft, your pet, and how many pets are already booked on the flight.

  1. Space for pets is limited

Airlines often cap the number of pets on each flight or in each cabin, so a place for your pet depends on what's still available.

  2. A request is not a confirmation

Asking to add a pet does not secure a place. Your pet is confirmed only when the airline adds it to your booking.

  3. Carrier and animal rules apply

Carrier size and weight limits, your pet's age, and breed restrictions for travel in the hold can all affect what the airline allows.

  4. Documents may be required

Health certificates or vaccination records may be needed, particularly for international trips. The airline and the destination set the requirements.

Costs

What adding a pet can cost

Pet charges are set by the airline and are separate from your ticket.

Airline pet charges

Usually charged for each pet and each direction of travel. Pets in the hold or shipped as cargo are often priced differently from pets in the cabin.

Our service fee

Quoted on the call before you authorize

Charged by Travelz Portal for our own help with this request: a flat fee per passenger, separate from the airline’s charges and not paid to the airline. There is no charge to discuss your options, and nothing is charged until you authorize it.

Special situations

Service dogs, international trips, and connections

Traveling with a trained service dog? Service dogs are covered by separate federal rules, and airlines may require the Department of Transportation's service animal forms. Contact the airline directly so it can make the arrangements. DOT service animal guidance

International trip or a connecting flight? Entry rules at your destination, and the policy of each airline on the itinerary, can affect whether your pet can travel. We can review what appears to apply before you decide.

Flying in very hot or cold weather? Some airlines restrict pets in the hold during certain temperatures or times of year.

Pet travel FAQs

Questions about flying with a pet

The airline always decides whether and how a pet can travel.

Can you guarantee my pet a place on the flight?

No. Airlines limit the number of pets on each flight, and they decide which animals they accept. We can check what appears to be available and request a place for your pet, but it is confirmed only when the airline adds it to your booking.

Can my pet travel with me in the cabin?

Only where the airline allows pets in the cabin. This is usually limited to small dogs and cats in a carrier that fits under the seat in front of you, within the airline's limit on pets per flight.

How much does it cost to add a pet?

The airline sets the charge. It is usually charged for each pet and each direction of travel, and it can differ between pets in the cabin and pets in the hold. If you ask us to add your pet, our own service fee applies as well. We explain both before you authorize anything.

Is an emotional support animal treated as a service animal?

Under U.S. Department of Transportation rules, airlines are not required to recognize emotional support animals as service animals and may treat them as pets. Trained service dogs are handled separately. See the DOT service animal guidance.

What documents does my pet need?

It depends on the airline and on where you are flying. Health certificates and vaccination records are common requirements, and international destinations can have their own entry and quarantine rules.

Can I add a pet directly with the airline?

Yes. You can contact your airline, or the company you originally booked with, directly. You do not need to use our service to add a pet.
